Monthly Favourites | October 2016

My monthly favourites for October have been mostly beauty bits and pieces and my return to regular reading…

A Respectable Trade by Philippa Gregory:

I just finished this book last night and it was a very quick read because I found myself in a ritual of laying in the bath and reading a few chapters every night once the kids were in bed. It is about the African slave trade and the relationship that develops between one male slave and his female owner. It’s quite graphic (read: real) in parts pertaining to the cruelties of slavery but I appreciate that the author gave an honest account of what slaves had to endure; from the stealing of free adults and children from their homelands, their voyage to England, the treatment they received and the cold mentalities of the slavers and owners themselves.

I really enjoyed this book, probably more so than any other Philippa Gregory novel I have read (The Other Boleyn Girl, The White Queen, etc). Read a synopsis of it here.

Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara:

This mascara makes my lashes looker thicker and longer in one application, without clumping them together. Purchase here.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Glosses:

I need to do a proper blog post about these because there is so much to say but in a nutshell I love them because they glide on, are the most highly pigmented glosses I have ever used and come in a gorgeous array of shades. I currently have five of them and seem to be always carrying one of them in my handbag. Buy here.

Loreal Nude Magique Cushion Foundation:

I’m not much of a drugstore makeup fan. When I had oily skin I could find plenty of suitable foundations but since my skin suddenly switched to being extremely dry I haven’t been able to find a decent dry skin foundation under $30 and have always stuck to buying the more luxe brands.

I did however discover this little gem and have been hooked on it since purchasing. The Loreal Nude Magique Cushion foundation gives a nice dewy finish to my skin, with a light-medium coverage. The packaging is cute and is probably the only foundation I own that is perfect for chucking in your handbag for touch-ups or on the go applications. Purchase here.

YSL Vernis A Levres Vinyl Cream Lipsticks:

I blogged about these here. When I want a face pick-me-up (especially on a dull skin day) these are what I have been reaching for. The neon pops of colour and shine always do it for me.

Jo Malone goodies:

The mini bottles from the Jo Malone Christmas Cologne Collection (blogged here) have been doing the rounds as my preferred scent to throw in my handbag. I keep trying to switch it up but it’s mostly been the Pomegranate Noir that I keep reaching for. Purchase here.

The Jo Malone Vitamin E Nourishing Hand Treatment has a special place next to my bed. I hardly ever wear hand cream during the day because I’m constantly washing my hands and it feels like a waste to lather it on only to wash it off an hour later so instead I’ve been applying a thick layer of it on my hands right before I go to bed. It’s very moisturising and always leaves my hands feeling soft and comfortable (dry skin woes). Purchase here.

What have you been loving lately? Have you ever used any of these products?

The book has me intrigued actually writing it down so I can read it in due course. Usually listen to audiobooks but some books you just have to read your self
